Hon. Colonial Secretary,
I make it as follows:-
As to the cost of a Hakau Boat
50 foot boat, copper bottomed $1,800. The boat would not last much more than 12 years, so that the yearly cost would be
1/12 of price $150
Interest 5% $90
Crew 12 men @ $8, 10 A, and 10% $384
Shipping and repairs $120
Furniture etc., $40
$757
Chair hire will be necessary in all cases.
Hiring a launch and boats would cost about $700.-
If a launch is used by the Inspector about 1/3 of the time will be saved, by having a quiet, certain and easy method of transport. As to the Assistant Inspector, in many parts of the country he will have to sleep at the various villages, and in all probability he will prefer to go by land and sleep at the various villages, rather than to go in a boat.
The Hakau boat would only be needed by the Inspector and his Assistant about 3 or 4 months in the year,
but if obtained it might possibly come in useful for the Land Court, if the members wish to personally inspect the country and decide cases on the spot.
On the whole I think the experiment of purchasing a Hakau Boat might be tried, if it is a failure as regards the work it was intended for, it could be sold by auction at no very great loss.
